La Rondplein : fortification et marchés
Vous vous trouvez à présent sur la Rondplein (place ronde). Étrange, n'est-ce pas ? En effet, elle a plutôt une forme carrée.
Jadis, il y avait une fortification à cet endroit. Les fortifications ont été construites il y a plus de 400 ans pour protéger les habitants des pillages commis par les militaires qui terrorisaient régulièrement les villages campinois au 17e siècle. La fortification avait environ la taille d'un terrain de football. Des douves ont été creusées et remplies d'eau. La terre excavée de la sorte a servi à la construction d'un rempart. Celui-ci protégeait les maisons. Un pont-levis a également été installé. Sur la fortification, il y avait des maisons, une étable, un four et un puits.
Aujourd'hui, la Rondplein accueille tous les mardis un marché traditionnel, et tous les dimanches, un marché aux bestiaux et agricole. Ce « Konijnenmarkt » (marché aux lapins) existe depuis 1885. La statue « het Konijn » (le lapin), du sculpteur Raymond Minnen, fait référence à cette tradition populaire.

Rondplein: entrenchment and markets
You are now at the Rondplein. Strange isn’t it, because it looks like a square.
This used to be the site of an entrenchment. Entrenchments were built over 400 years ago to protect residents against plundering and looting by soldiers who regularly terrorised villages in the Kempen region in the 17th century. The entrenchment was approximately the size of a football pitch. Trenches were dug, which were then filled with water. The soil that came from these trenches was used to create an embankment that shielded the houses. A draw-bridge was also fitted. The entrenchment itself featured houses, a stable, an oven and a well.
The Rondplein now hosts the market every Tuesday and an animal and farming market every Sunday. This ‘Rabbit market’ has existed since 1885. A statue called ‘the Rabbit’, by sculptor Raymond Minnen, honours this folk event.

Rondplein: Schanze und Märkte
Jetzt stehen Sie auf dem Rondplein. Eigentlich seltsam, denn er sieht eher wie ein Rechteck aus.
Früher stand auf diesem Platz eine Schanze. Die Schanzen wurden vor über 400 Jahren errichtet, um die Bewohner vor den Plünderungen und Beutezügen der Soldaten zu schützen, die die kempener Dörfer im 17. Jahrhundert regelmäßig heimsuchten. Die Schanze war ungefähr so groß wie ein Fußballfeld. Man hob Grachten aus, die mit Wasser gefüllt wurden. Die Erde, die aus diesen Grachten kam, diente zur Anlage eines Walls. Der Wall schützte die Häuser. Auch eine Zugbrücke wurde errichtet. Auf der Schanze selbst standen Häuser, ein Stall, ein Ofen und ein Brunnen.
Heute findet auf dem Rondplein jeden Dienstag der Markt und jeden Sonntag der Tier- und Bauernmarkt statt. Den ‚Konijnenmarkt’ (Kaninchenmarkt) gibt es seit 1885. Das Standbild ‚Het Konijn’ von der Hand des Bildhauers Raymond Minnen ehrt diesen Volksbrauch.
